What’s in my pack?!

Hey y’all!

Quick Update: I’m sitting at the airport waiting to fly to Georgia, where we have a few days of training at World Race headquarters. Then later this week I will be flying to Panajachel, Guatemala with my amazing team! Yes, I said Guatemala.. If you’ve been here since the beginning of this journey you may be wondering why we are not going to Nepal anymore. Well, we live in an era of Covid and sadly it has forced India into another lockdown and Nepal has subsequently closed it’s borders. However, I am so stocked for the ministry opportunities in Pana and cannot wait to share all of the cool ways God is showing up in the ordinary and the extraordinary (more on that in the next posts)!! Until then, I thought it would be fun to share a little peek into what I’ve packed.

For my large pack I chose the Women’s Aerial 60L Osprey hiking pack. You might be thinking that 60L is a lot (or if your an over-packer, like I usually am, it might be too small) however, after countless hours of packing and repacking, it seems to be just the right size! For my carry on I am using my Osprey Daylight pack which is holding some essential items I might need on travel days.

So here’s a quick peek inside!

The Essentials: bedding, towels, medication, ect…

Our ministry hosts in Pana are able to provided our team with mattresses (happy dance!!!). This means we only need a sleeping bag and a few other items for bedding. I packed a sleeping bag rated for warmer weather since we will be sleeping inside and Guatemala usually stays between 70-60 degrees. I also have a polyester sleeping bag liner which can be used as sheets or a top cover for those warmer nights! For a pillow I am using a small 11X14inch inflatable camping pillow. The perks of this pillow is how small it packs, which comes in handy when your sleeping bag takes up most of your pack (hence why I have a 60L). I’ve also packed a microfiber quick dry camping towel. Rumor has it that we will be hand washing clothes so this will come in handy!

Other essential items I have include medications/first aid items. Since we do live in a covid world, I threw in a thermometer and Tylenol just in case. As well as some allergy and Benadryl medication because I have super bad allergies (yuck!). Other essential items include sunscreen, bug spray, a headlamp, extra carabiners for my pack, my handy dandy life straw, and laundry leaves. Let me tell you if you’ve never used laundry leaves, you are missing out!

Clothing & Shoes:

When it comes to packing clothing in a hiking bag, packing cubes are your best friend. I’ve packed all of my clothing in two 9X10 cubes. In the first cube I’ve got 8 t-shirts, 2 solid shirts, 2 tank tops, 1 long skirt and 1 long dress for church. In the second cube I have 1 pair of Patagonia baggies (I will be traveling in my second pair), 2 pairs of pajama shorts aka nike shorts, 3 pairs of linen pants, 2 light weight joggers, and my rain jacket. It is rainy season in Guatemala, which means rain storms like you’ve never seen.. all day long! I have the North Face Venture 2 rain jacket and it is 100% waterproof which is a must during this season.

Since it does rain 24/7, I’ve kept shoes minimal and only packed my Chaco’s and tennis shoes. I originally had Birkenstocks packed but ended up ditching them to free up some weight – also birks and rain don’t mix so it seemed like the smarter choice.

Now that’s definitely not all!

I also have some other random items like a hat, bible, journal, hydro flask, iPad for writing blogs, a speaker for those Jesus jams, and all of my toiletries.

And don‘t worry, I have my passport and travel documentations!

My 60L pack was checked, weighing just at 30lbs (ditching those birks were a good idea!). I am also using an Osprey small airporter bag to protect my pack from getting caught during transport to and from planes. This is a must if you plan to travel with a hiking bag!

Although I have spent hours packing, I probably forgot something or brought something I won’t use. It’s hard to feel completely prepared when you have no idea what you will be doing for 6 weeks…

However, who could not be prepared when we have such an awesome God?!?

Matthew 6:25

“Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing?”

I hope you’ve enjoyed this quick look into what I‘ve packed!
